SN SOS award 3rd annual scholarship to top Graduating Hindu student from Saraswati Vidya Niketan (SVN) High School, in Guyana
Monday, 16 September 2013 23:23

Under the astute leadership of Swami Aksharanand the students of Saraswati Vidya Niketan high school continue to excel. As related by Swamiji in an email to his supporters the students and teachers continue to perform brilliantly at the regional examinations. 12 out of the top 69 performers this year was from SVN, and among them was an exception student who passed all 15 of her subjects.

Continuing its tradition of Seva and to help support students in Guyana, Surya Narayan Seva Outreach Sang awarded the Pandit Ram & Radha Hardowar Sanskriti Scholarship to Tulsi Rafena Mustapha, the top Hindu graduate of Saraswati Vidya Niketan high school. Rafena is an excellent student and she passed all 15 of her subjects with distinction and met the requirements for the Scholarship.

The members of SN SOS would like to congratulate Tulsi Rafena Mustapha on this well deserved Scholarship and wish her continued success. It is the hope of the organization that this scholarship will help Rafena to continue her educational endeavors so that she can achieve her goals as well as increase her contribution to society.

The Scholarship was provided in one-time payment of $800 (US Dollars) to Rafena by Neera Dukhi a devotee of Shri Surya Narayan Mandir who represented SN SOS as the presenter of the award during her trip to Guyana.

After receiving the award Tulsi Rafena sent a detailed and heartfelt email to Pt. Ram Hardowar which follows.

“My most humble Namaskar Pandit Ji,

My name is Rafena Mustapha from Saraswati Vidya Niketan. I wrote 15 subjects at the CSEC examinations in May/June 2013 and received 15 distinctions. Today some devotees from your temple visited the school to present me with the monetary award which the temple usually gives to the best graduating student.

I was also informed that the student must be interested in pursuing further studies and must also be a Hindu before he/she can qualify for the award. I assure you that I have every intention of furthering my studies and I am also a Hindu. My name is of Islamic origin because my father was a Muslim and his mother gave me my name. Despite this I was born and grown as a Hindu and I go to temple regularly.

I am very honoured and grateful to have received the award and I would like to sincerely thank you and the members of your temple. I mentioned earlier that I intend to pursue further studies and I have indicated this to Swami Ji. He has given me valuable advice and in the coming school year I hope to study for the CAPE examinations which are a level higher than CXC and which will assist me in gaining admission at a college. At the same time I will be assisting as a teacher at SVN.

After CAPE I hope to major in Educational Psychology at a college overseas. Those are the plans that I have for the future and the contribution made by your temple will go a very long way in helping me to accomplish these goals. I consider myself truly lucky to have been a recipient of the award.

Once again, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to you for the award and I seek your blessings as I endeavour to pursue tertiary education.

Pt. Ram responded to Rafena congratulating her on the outstanding academic achievement and to wish her continued success. Following is an excerpt from his email.

“CONGRATULATIONS! – We (SNSOS Directors and Executives) salute you on being able to pass all 15 subjects with distinction. It is very nice to hear from you and to see your interest in higher studies in the field of Educational Psychology. I encourage you to pursue your selected career with the same vigor and enthusiasm as your CXC. Remember you follow the footsteps of great daughters and mothers like Draupadi, Shakuntala, Maitreyi, Gargi, Madalasa etc.

We wish you all success in your future endeavors and may Mata Saraswati continue to bestow her grace and blessings on you. If this organization can be of any additional help to you please do not hesitate to request.”

On September 16, 2012, Surya Narayan Seva Outreach Sang (SN SOS) in an effort to unite Hindus across America and in collaboration with the Hindu Mandirs National Blood Donation Campaign, held its 2nd annual blood drive. The blood drive was scheduled to coincide with the anniversary of 9/11 so that we will not forget the sacrifice made by the brave heroes who valiantly gave their lives to help save others.
According to the American Red Cross more than 44,000 blood donations are needed each day; every two seconds someone in the U.S needs blood; a single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood. These are very grim statistics, especially since many people do not donate blood, and there are no substitutes for this precious commodity.

Blood cannot be manufactured. It can only come from generous donors. Giving blood is giving life and is one of the greatest forms of Seva. This blood drive like the 1sttook tremendous planning and coordination, and many were instrumental to its success. Dr. Anand Hardowar of SN SOS once again coordinated the drive with the New York Blood Center, as well as spending time educating the devotees of Surya Mandir on the importance of giving blood and eligibility criteria during Sunday services.

On the Sunday prior to the blood drive, Pt. Ram Hardowar, the spiritual leader of Shri Surya Narayan Mandir personally visited several Mandirs in the Queens area to speak about the blood drive, and to encourage the devotees of these Mandirs to participate.
This year’s blood drive was held in the Mandir’s courtyard as a bus was provided by the New York Blood Center. The bus was fully equipped with all supplies needed for the blood donation process as well as a small rest area for donors to recuperate after donating.

The drive was scheduled from 10:00 to 2:00 PM and the blood center personnel arrived very early in the morning to set up. Promptly at 10 AM, the onsite registration process started, followed by an initial screening to determine the eligibility of the potential donors.Prior to donating a nutritional meal was provided to all prospective donors.
Some first time donors were initially hesitant about donating blood, but many of the experienced donors helped to allay the fears of the newcomers by sharing with them how simple and easy the process really was. This year we had quite a few sixteen year olds who participated in the blood drive. This goes to show that the lessons imparted by our learned Panditsto practice Dhanam(charity) one of the four pillars of Sanatan Dharma is not falling on deaf ears. Instead, the teens, as well as the adults of Surya Mandir are practicing what they learn by participating in this Maha Seva event and giving the gift of life. It goes without saying that one should practice what they teach and this event was no exception. Pt. Ram Hardowar (Guruji) and Bahenji Radha Hardowar (Guruma), Bhai Amar (President of Surya Mandir) as well as several other executives of Surya Mandir and SN SOS were on hand as donors for the blood drive.
After giving blood the donors were directed to a recovery area in the mobile bus where snacks (Pretzels, cookies, etc) and drinks (Water, Juice, etc) were available. The donors were encouraged to drink fluids and eat a salty snack to help in the recovery process and to make sure they were well enough to leave.

SN SOS awards 2nd annual scholarships to top graduating students in Guyana
Monday, 17 September 2012 01:18

The grades are in, and the students in Guyana continue to excel in their studies.   To help encourage these students to maximize their full potential, SN SOS awarded the Pt. Ram & Radha Hardowar scholarship to two top graduating students.   The criteria used to select the students for these awards are as follows: (i) student must be high academic performer (ii) student must be willing to continue their studies (III) student must be involved in the propagation of Sanatan Dharma (iv) special consideration is given to students in financial need.

On August 26th 2012, a scholarships award of $800 U.S Dollars was given to Vishwanti Oudhram. Vishwanti was given an award based on a number of factors. The most important one being that she was one of the top graduating students of the Class of 2012 at Saraswati Vidya Niketan.  She obtain twelve (12) grade ones and one (1) grade two at the CSEC examinations.   The very next day after the award was presented to Vishwanti, she sent a thank you email to Pt. Ram thanking him for the award. Here is an excerpt of her email “I, Vishwati Oudhram, take great pleasure in thanking you for awarding me a scholarship of US $800. I am certain that it will play an essential role in helping me to pursue further studies in the accounting field.” Here entire message is on the SN SOS website.   Saraswati Vidya Nikentan was chosen as one of the schools to receive an award due to its continued focus on higher education in conjunction with the propagation and the teachings of Sanatan Dharma.

On August 27th 2012, a scholarship award of $800 U.S Dollars was given to Sandra Ramlachan a student of Skeldon Line Path Secondary School.  Sandra obtained 9 subjects in recent CSEC examinations and plans to pursue her studies in Business Managment.  Sandra sent a thank you letter to Pt. Ram in which she express her ‘hearty appreciation’ for being given the scholarship. A student from Skeldon Line Path was selected because this was the school that Pt. Ram Hardowar attended when he was in Guyana and he sees the need to give hack to his country of birth and especially to the school that help to mold to become the person he is today.

The members of SN SOS would like to congratulate Vishwanti Oudhram and Sandra Ramlachan on their well deserved Scholarship awards and wishes them continued success. It is the hope of the organization that these scholarships will enable the awardees to continue their educational endeavors so that they can achieve their individual goals as well as increase their contribution to society.

The Scholarships were provided in one-time payments of $800 (US Dollars) to each of the recipient by Ayome Maniram a Member of SN SOS, during her visit to Guyana.  It should be noted that Pt. Ram & Radha Hardowar are personally funding the Scholarships that are given to students at SVN and Skeldon Line Path Secondary School.  SN SOS would like to thank Ayome for taking the time to present the Scholarships on behalf of the organization.
